What is the Artisan of the Year Award?

This award was created by the 2023 Board of Directors to honor Margo Kent from Staunton, VA, the 1958 VPPA President, the first woman president of VPPA.   She was well respected as an artist and was the first VPPA member to receive her Master of Photography degree from PPA (13th woman in PPA).  In one of her editorial messages, Margo strongly advocated that professional appearance and demeanor were as important as the quality of the images for all who represent the VPPA.  It was during her term that the Traveling Loan Collection began to be exhibited as a separate division, distinct from the general print display (both of which are retired today).

At Margo's direction, the Virginia degree and credit system was developed in 1962 to recognize exceptional ability in photography and service to the profession.   By the 1960's Margo devoted a great deal of her time painting portraits or painting photographs, a specialty she developed.

Margo retired in 1981 and died in 2003 at the age of 88. Her art collection stands alone as the Augusta County Historical Society's largest collection to date.

The Artisan of the Year Theme from 2024 to the summer of 20245

How can you get involved in the Artisan of the Year Project?

The fee to enter is $100 per entry. In one $100 entry you compose a series of four compelling images submitted throughout the year, usually quarterly. The photographer's creative vision and technical skill should be evident in every image, reflecting a deep understanding of both the subject and context. The maker can participate in multiple entries.

Across all four images, the photographer's work demonstrates a consistent high level of creativity. We invite our photographers to develop their images through the lens of the artisan within. A great way to blend artistry with precision, making the images a standout in the Artisan of the Year competition.

Judging is done quarterly or semi-annually. Three judges analyze the images and they are given numerical scores based on four areas with 25 points the highest score in each area. Scores are emailed to the maker after each judging.

The year goes from August to August with the finalist announced at the PhotoConnect Summer event. The Artisan of the Year owns bragging rights for one full year by wearing the medallion at all events. The medallion is relinquished at year end and as the new Atisan is selected. The retired Artisan will be presented a framed plaque.

The proceeds from this artistic challenge goes 100% to the VPPA Fundraising Account.
