This class focuses on using studio lighting and posing as intentional tools for visual storytelling. Students will learn how lighting direction, quality of light, and shadow placement affect mood, subject matter, and the overall story of an image. The course also covers how posing, movement, and body language support that story and direct the viewer’s eye.
Topics include evaluating light for narrative impact, shaping the subject with studio lighting, and directing poses that feel purposeful rather than static. Students will observed controlled adjustments to light, and how posing can reinforce emotion, create story, and support a visual concept. Jessica Robertson is a professional photographer with more than 25 years of experience. Based in Ashland, Virginia, she leads a dedicated team from her retail studio, where they create authentic, timeless imagery that tells each client’s unique story. Her work is rooted in a deep respect for craft, connection, and the power of visual storytelling. She holds numerous prestigious photographic degrees and certifications, including the PPA Master of Photography, PPA Master Craftsman, and the designation of PPA Certified Professional Photographer. In addition to her work in the studio, Jessica is an Affiliate Juror for Professional Photographers of America (PPA), contributing her expertise to the evaluation and advancement of photographic standards nationwide. She has also earned the Associate Fellow and Fellow of Photography degrees from the Virginia Professional Photographers Association (VPPA), recognizing her commitment to education, service, and professional achievement.
